Working From Home - 15 Things You Must Have To Enjoy Making Money From Home

If you are to succeed in working from home - and to be able to enjoy it at the same time, there are a number of things you will need to have.

Let's take a look at some of them -

Um...just one thing, these are in no particular order of importance. You will no doubt shuffle and arrange them to suit your own thinking.

As you read through these you will realize that all are interlinked in some way - collectively they will ensure your success.

1. Money

I have, just like you, seen dozens of home business offerings, particularly on the internet, that claim that you can "work from home - no investment required" or similar.

WOW..!

Imagine that....no money required to make money! How easy is that to believe? To win the lottery you still need money....to buy the ticket in the first place.

I cannot think for one minute, how anyone can believe that you can start a business from home with NO money, and then expect to be able to make money working from home.

Hang on, now that I really am thinking about it, if you were to be given some lemons by your neighbor and you loaned the equipment from your mom's kitchen cupboard, you could start your own lemonade stall from your home - with no money.

But, is that really making money from home? Maybe, maybe not.

Depends on what you wanted to get out of the business. That small home business would make you some pocket money. But I don't think you or I are looking for ways to make pocket money. Most of us are looking to earn some real money working from home.

That, I am sure you realize by now, is going to take some form of investment in money. Whether you like it or not, you will at some stage be required to pull out the piggy bank and break it open. There are numerous things that you will need to invest in when running your own home business.

Stationery, equipment, computer, advertising, bank account and accounting fees are just some that spring to mind. Depending on the method you intend to use for making money from home, the list could be quite long.

The bottom line... you DO need money to start working from home. Accept it as a given. However, that does not have to be a lot of money. You will discover many opportunities both on this site and off it, that you can invest in for relatively little. Don't give up just because you need to have some money to start making money from home.

Remember your driving force, the reason why you need to start your own home business, and the money requirement becomes relative in your mind.

2. Time

No matter how you look at it, you are going to have to invest time into your business. How much time will depend on the type of business and what your goals are that you have set for yourself.

Do you have that time available?

If not, can you make it available by shuffling your program a little? By re-prioritizing some activities? By spending less time slouched in front of the TV?

There is no such thing as a business that runs itself, despite what you may have read on some web sites. There is no such thing as a business that runs on "autopilot".

Without question, you will need to input time into working from home, otherwise you are not going to be making money from home. It is a fact that some folk do have success working from home and are only putting "maintenance" time into their business. But, those businesses are probably older than two years, they have gone through the high levels of time investment that was required.I'm willing to bet that if you asked those folk, they would tell you they pulled some all-nighters in the first few weeks of their business start-up.

You will need to get used to the idea of investing time into working from home.

3. Family Support

The support of your family is really important. That's assuming you're not single, of course!

Not only does the support of family assist in motivating you to achieve, you will no doubt be discussing your home business with friends and close associates as well.

Before you do that - please remember that they may not have the vision and share the enthusiasm that you have for wanting to make money from home. They may be quite negative in fact.

You will at all times need to avoid the "nay-sayers" around you. You must attempt to surround yourself with positive people. If your family and friends are naturally negative by nature, then you will need to avoid discussing your plans with them. Their negativity will pull you down and change your thinking toward becoming successful working from home.

Your family's support will enable you to put in the long hours that may be required at times (particularly at start up) and they will not be extra demanding of your time, understanding that you need the input of long hours to get your business established. It won't last forever - before long the income you will be earning from your home business will enable you to spend more time with them.

4. Tenacity

If you look up the definition of "tenacity" in a dictionary, you will find it says something along the lines of - "persistent in maintaining or seeking something valued or desired".

In your case the "something valued" would be your desire to be making money from home, to be working from home.

So, having tenacity or being tenacious would mean that you would be doing everything needed to be successful. You would be putting in the hours, doing self-study on the subject matter, developing your skills, finding your market, balancing the books and more.

It's really simple - consider the tortoise (by the way, there are 45 species worldwide, but I digress....sorry) - there are two things I can tell you about the tortoise, one - he goes nowhere unless he sticks his neck out! And two - he will endlessly slog and grind his way through the undergrowth and go around any obstacle in his path he cannot climb over, to get where he wants to be.

That's why you need tenacity. To confront your obstacles and either go through, over or around them to get what you want.

5. Organizational Skills

The more you are able to organize your life and all in it, the more likely you are to succeed in working from home.

Before you even actually start making money from home, you will need to organize a few things - your business plan (very important, more on this later), what trading entity you will be, licensing requirements, local authority bylaws that may apply, insurance, records and bookkeeping and more.

Without the ability to organize and plan your day-to-day activities working from home, you will find yourself running out of time and not completing tasks that are important.

Quick tip - use a diary! But, don't be like me...I write things in my diary, and then neglect to open the thing every morning and see what is planned for the day.

I also make use of a year planner and a white board to plan what is happening.

6. Energy

Working from home take effort! And effort requires energy. Do not think for one second that making money from home is a cushy little one hour a week, feet on the desk kind of thing. Sometimes working from home can be more exhausting than working full time in salaried employment (a job).

You will need to take care of your health and be exercising regularly. Proper sleep is important. You will need to be making some careful decisions while working from home - remember, you are the boss and the responsibility for your success rests on you.

Part of sustained energy also means that you must take breaks from the hard work. Spend time relaxing with your family or on your own. Working from home can be quite stressful and you will need to balance your work and play.

7. Self Discipline

I cannot emphasize enough how important this is!

When working from home you don't have the underlying threat of being fired because you pitch up for work late, or even decide to take the day off. You are the boss...be pretty hard to fire yourself!

You will need to have the self discipline to start work at the right time and knock off at the right time, even if it is only a half day you want to put in. To work from home means you can be easily distracted - the TV, the kids, quick run down to the mall, sleep in a little...and any number of other silly reasons.

Understand that to work from home means just that - to WORK. As your own boss you MUST discipline yourself to produce. Without doing that you are doomed to failure.

8. Persistence

You've seen the famous quote - "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence,

Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

It's quite simple, really... persistence beats resistance! It means doing a little every day. The task becomes easier when you do it little bit by little bit.

So...how do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time!

9. Knowledge

Knowledge is power!

Develop your skills and talents by reading (the internet is a gold mine for information seekers), listening to others and asking others who may have the answers you seek.

Don't just focus on the singular aspects of the particular work from home business you may wish to start, or may already have started. You will also need knowledge of your market, your customers, bookkeeping, advertising, computers and financial management, to name but a few.

You need to become a sponge - sucking up any bit of information you can get that will be even remotely related to your home business. Subscribe to entrepreneur magazine (or similar) and other periodicals, eZines and newsletters.

You will find the more you learn, the more fun it becomes!

10. Will To Succeed

What is your desire?

Without a burning desire to achieve a certain goal you will not have much will to succeed. Don't confuse this with a wish to succeed. Everyone would like to succeed - dreaming of great things and lots of money. But... that's all it remains - a dream!

They say a winner is a dreamer who never quits! He never quits because of his strong will to succeed. Failure is not an option.

Develop your burning desire, your driving force, and you automatically strengthen your will to succeed.

You can be successful when working from home - how much do you want to?

11. Selling Ability

Whether you like it or not, to be successful working from home, you will need to sell, to promote your business or your service. Most people hate selling, or so they think!

What they really dislike is the fear of rejection when the customer, or prospective customer says "no" to the product or service that is being sold.

The trick is never to take it personally. You've got to go through the "no's" to get to the "yes's". One simple way to help yourself with this is to allocate a monetary value to each sale.

Say, for example, that a sale would bring you $100. Assuming you know that you are likely to get 3 "no's" before the "yes", then each time you hear the "no" say to yourself "thank you for the $25".

Think about it... three "no's" at $25 each equals $75 plus the one yes and you're there!

Never think that you cannot sell - you've been selling since you were born (almost), you sold your hunger to your mother, you sold your diaper change to your mom, you sold yourself into the school drama or debating team, you sold yourself to your wife (or husband) you sell yourself or your ideas to your friends, colleagues and family all the time. You CAN sell!

12. A Market

Before you start working from home you must make sure you have a market for the goods or service that you are offering.

Do your research properly. Assess the market in terms of demographics - adults, kids, teens, elderly folk and businesses. Make sure that the product or service you will be offering is in demand, by drafting a basic questionnaire and going door to door in your area.

You will be able to determine if there is a need very quickly. Identify something that is in demand and not yet being supplied and you're in business. It's not much good offering a lawn mowing service when you're surrounded by high-rise blocks of flats and offices, but a window cleaning service might do the trick.

13. Space/Place

A place to call your own...

You will need to dedicate a room preferably, but an unused corner somewhere will do the trick. Working from home means you still need place to have a desk, filing cabinet, stationery storage, equipment, computer and probably a lot more.

That place will also need to be out of the way of children (probably) and may need to give some privacy if you ever need to have customers visit you at your "office".

If you intend manufacturing a product then you will need to be able to lock up and go. Unfinished items can't be left lying around.

If you don't have the space you will need to make space by purchasing or building a shed out in the garden if necessary. Don't bomb your idea simply because you think you don't have enough space. Get creative and make the space.

14. Strength

Working from home means you will need to be strong - emotionally and mentally (are they the same thing?). You will face challenges every day that you may not have prepared for. This can result in stress - some stress is good as it can drive you forward. You will need to learn to tell the difference between good and bad stress.

There will be times when you feel you are going nowhere fast - your family may even criticise you. Remember to ignore the nay-sayers. Take a break, gather your thoughts and get going.

Be strong - remember the saying "when the going gets tough, the tough get going!"

15. Understanding

Realize from the start - when you are working from home you are basically unemployed. When you wake up every day, you don't go off to the work and get paid by a boss just for being there.

You will now be in the enviable position that millions dream about - waking up every morning unemployed. The difference is that within minutes you can be employed. The second you get up out of bed to have breakfast, get dressed and walk to your own "office"...you have just been employed and will be making money from home. You need to understand this concept.

What's my point?

Simple.... you are either unemployed or employed, when you work from home.

Which is it going to be?
